Bookmakers Donate to UK Charities Despite Royal Ascot Betting Downturn

Although experiencing a downturn on wagers at the celebrated Royal Ascot, oddsmakers are nevertheless contributing a considerable amount to charitable organizations within the UK.

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) affiliates, encompassing prominent entities such as Flutter, bet365, and Entain, will be relinquishing a combined £277,000 (approximately $352,000). This philanthropic act, stemming from their commitment to contribute all earnings from the Britannia Stakes race at Royal Ascot, will be distributed among six UK charities.

While the previous year’s race yielded a significant £120,000 for the designated charities, this year’s outcomes were not as favorable for the bookmakers. Despite this, they resolved to uphold their promise and guarantee the charities received a substantial sum.

Michael Dugher, the BGC’s Chief Executive, conveyed his satisfaction, remarking, “It’s remarkable that BGC members are yet again positioned to make such a sizable contribution to a spectrum of deserving organizations. I am certain the funds we generated will have a profound impact on the commendable endeavors undertaken by all the charities that will profit.” He proudly mentioned that BGC members have now amassed nearly £6 million for charities nationwide.

This act of giving signifies the fourth consecutive year where BGC members have generously bestowed their Britannia Stakes proceeds.

Tim Lawler MBE, Chief Executive of SportsAid, one of the recipient charities, articulated his appreciation, stating, “We are immensely thankful for this generous contribution. We take great pride in being a participant in this impactful initiative, which constitutes a part of the esteemed and quintessentially British Royal Ascot.”

This isnt the initial instance of a philanthropic endeavor failing to reach its monetary objectives. Previously in the year, William Hill, a wagering firm, committed to contributing all earnings from the Eurovision Song Contest finale to “Support Ukraine,” a humanitarian group. When Loreen, the anticipated victor from Sweden, triumphed, William Hill declared a contribution of £200,000. Nevertheless, this sum was provided even though wagers on the competition had actually risen by 23% in contrast to the prior year.
