Horse Racing to Welcome Back Fans in England

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is pleased with the government’s proposal to ease Covid-19 limitations. They stated they will collaborate with the government to permit spectators to safely return to races as soon as feasible.

The BHA is delighted about the plans to relax restrictions, stating that horse racing has been severely impacted by the pandemic.
The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, declared the plan for a gradual easing of restrictions yesterday (February 22). This will permit businesses and venues to reopen, with the aim of eliminating nearly all restrictions by June 21.

In the second stage of the plan, betting shops will be permitted to reopen, which could occur as early as April 12. Other gambling establishments will be allowed to reopen from May 17 in the third stage.

Sporting events will also be able to welcome fans in the third stage. Indoor events will be restricted to half capacity or 1,000 individuals, and outdoor events will be restricted to half capacity or 4,000 individuals. However, for large venues that hold 40,000 individuals, a maximum of 10,000 spectators will be permitted to attend.

Throughout the initial period of confinement in the United Kingdom, horse racing was put on hold in March of the previous year and did not recommence until June. However, enthusiasts have been unable to participate in person, with the exception of a few experimental gatherings.

The British Horseracing Authority declared that the entire sector has rigorously followed race day procedures, enabling races to proceed without spectators, thereby sustaining the numerous livelihoods that rely on the industry. “British horseracing was designated as an elite sport, which made this all possible.

“Nevertheless, we do long for the presence of the owners, and we do yearn for the spectators, whose participation infuses the sport with such vitality.

“We have implemented additional precautions to diminish the likelihood of virus transmission and are contemplating further alternatives. We will now collaborate with the government to advocate for a return to a state that surpasses the current restrictions, which permit only essential personnel, enabling owners to rejoin the scene.

“We have scheduled further discussions with officials, which will empower us to formulate specific proposals for events, encompassing potential pilot gatherings.”

The outlined plan pertains solely to England, but comparable strategies are anticipated to be unveiled by the Scottish and Welsh governments within the coming days.

The BHA further emphasized that while the announcement of potential reopening dates is a “highly encouraging” indication, the persistent absence of fans continues to exert financial strain on the industry, which necessitates additional assistance.

The British Horseracing Authority stated that the closure of wagering establishments has exacerbated this issue. “We are in discussions with the government regarding financial assistance,” they added.
